μi18n!

What's this about?

The goal of μi18n is to facilitate client-side localization of content on a site using standards-driven HTML markup.

HTML4 provides a way to express content translations[ref].  The μi18n project aims to build support for this standard, and for client-side content localization in general, by:

  1. Building user interfaces that make it easier for end users to properly mark translations
  2. Building libraries and user interfaces to perform localization for content when available

We believe that if we treat localizations as first-class content, and if we build tools to encourage and facilitate that perspective, translations can be produced more collaboratively, transparently and organically — and therefore more and better translations can be available for content on the Web.

  • Or you might want to look at the first draft of implementation for a more concrete explanation.
  • Or you might want to look at the development notes for a more long-winded explanation -- it's where I'll put ongoing thoughts that haven't settled into a more appropriate place yet.
  • But most likely you want to look at the next steps to get a very quick overview of the project's status and what we consider to be the next steps.
