Coming series: At the crossroads –Europe’s movements respond
from Sol Trumbo Vilaon Jun 06, 2014 03:12 PM COMING SERIES: AT THE CROSSROADS - EUROPE'S MOVEMENTS RESPOND Media coverage of the EUROPEAN ELECTIONS has focused on the disturbing RISE OF THE FAR RIGHT, but much less on the advance of progressive forces in Greece, Spain and to a lesser extent in other countries undergoing austerity policies. The media have also been blind to the inspiring struggles waged by diverse social movements across Europe. The direction for EUROPE IS AT A POLITICAL CROSSROADS, but we believe it is possible to advance a vision of Europe not based on nationalism and repression of minorities, but based on solidarity and democracy. With a series of articles "AT THE CROSSROADS - EUROPE'S MOVEMENTS RESPOND" we aim to provide well founded analysis by and for the European social movements acting against the EU crisis regime. TNI asked some of the most relevant European social movements of the last years what STRATEGIC LESSONS can be learned from recent resistance, the challenges we currently face and how TO BE PREPARED FOR UPCOMING STRUGGLES. Starting next week with a reflection from writer and journalist Bernardo Gutiérrez about "NETWORK MOVEMENTS", we will publish short articles from the Water Anti-privatisation movement, Blockupy, the Debt Audit Campaign, Alter Summit and others to follow until the end of June. Do not miss this series of articles that aim to provide tools and insights so that we can continue to STRENGTHEN EUROPEAN SOCIAL MOVEMENTS and sharpen the effectiveness of our strategies and tactics in the NEW POLITICAL CONJUNCTION created by the European elections. from Sol Trumbo Vilaon Jun 06, 2014 05:08 PM Thanks Bernando, especially for your excellent article, which will open the series. You would be surprised by the ignorance that many social actors (specially the most traditional) have in regards the new political practices. I think your article will give some light there. And yes, I hope that this articles reach a wider public as well, however exchanging lessons and strategies between different social movements is already very important. Question and Proposal about Coming series: At the crossroads –Europe’s movements respond
from PERRIN on Jun 06, 2014 09:08 PMHello Dear Sol and Bernardo Excuse me if I make an intrusion on this mailing list which I have vever enough time to use... It is late but not too late to contact you I was in Dakar FSM in 2011, then in Tunis FSM in 2013 I am an activist engaged in many social movements in France since years, which I have supported, participating and taking interviews from actors of them, then writing books - either published, or the majority of them not - upon these social movements: - the student movements of 2005 against CPE and against LRU (the privatisation of knowledge and universities) in 2007-2008 and 2008_2009, more than 200 interviews, not published but I diffuse it on Internet and social networks - the movement of unemployed (I was in it since 1994) and then its death and new movements of precarious (I created with precarious young trade unionists or strikers a network in 2001 against Precarity, still well alive, STOP PRECARITE). I published three books ont them (in 2004 "Chômeurs et précaires au coeur de la question sociale" at La Dispute, then "Désobéir à la précarité " in 2011 and in 2003 "Précarité: points de vue du mouvement social") - the fights and revolts of young children of migrants living in popular suburbs and excluded from work ("Jeunes Magrhébins de France: la place refusée", L'Harmattan, 2008), with a book not yet published 3Sortir de la nasse. Jeunes des quartiers, jeunes du monde" -the fights of workers against closures, delocalisations, firing plans, with an enquiry in 40 firms in fight in France in 2008-2009, not published but diffused largely on Internet "Haute tension. Les luttes des salariés contre les plans sociaux 2008-2010" - the refuse of identity minister created by Sarkozy in 2007 (200 young people interviewed) published "Identité nationale, amer Ministère" L'Harmattan 2010 - the lessons of the huge movement against the pensions reform in 2010, not published pointing new ways of fight, keeping the streets, the axes of capital circulation, occupying firms... which put trade unions in big trouble - the chase against ROms (in writing) and I'm finishing a book upon new political acts and practices So, please, could we exchange and how ? Could you send me back the article of Bernardo ? May I send you an article in english upon these new poltical practices far away from the old polmitical parties ? Could we discuss on the phone? Would you be interested in coming in Paris from 19 to 23 august to the ATTAC european summer university where I proposed a workshop upon these questions ? from T_indignadx on Jun 06, 2014 05:21 PMHia all, I hope this is a good thread to share an interview to a member of "PODEMOS" (yes we can) political party in english. One of our Occupy fellows in Australia had the chance to interview a member of the political party in Spain that gave the rotten establishment a cool surprise last May 25th at the EU parliament elections. The audio is here: http://perthindymedia.org/2014/06/02/jesus-castillo-podemos-spain-candidate-in-the-recent-european-parliamentary-election/ I am personally not a supporter of this political party but I think some of you can be interested in hearing from the source in order to understand and form your own opinion about the situation here. I sent this message to the squares list squares@... less than 2 days ago and I got the same response as Ulrike.
