 PORTUGUES

ENGLISH

The title of Ooni is unique to the king of Ile-Ife (Nigeria), cradle of the Yoruba civilization. Ooni is the highest spiritual and cultural leader of the Yoruba people, an African collective whose population is scattered in four countries of West Africa - Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana - with the status of head of state. members are recognized as descendants of the great Odùdùwa Atèwònrò (also called Oòduà), a mystical ancestor who, according to the myths of the nation, founded the land at the request of the great Olodumare, the creator God himself in primordial times. Ile-Ife is the capital and center of the civilization of this people and it was from there that the Yoruba princes left to whom Odùdùwa entrusted the crowns and swords of conquest to found new kingdoms in the region that today covers West Africa. From there came kingdoms and nationalities that still survive today such as Oyo, Benin, Sabi, Popo, Ekiti, Ijexá, Egbá, Eko, Badagri, Adjatché, Ketu, Gá, Idaissa, etc. From the African land, these peoples spread to the Americas during the centuries of slavery and contractual work and ended up becoming one of the most emblematic groups in the process of preserving black culture and identity in Latin American and Caribbean countries. Today his descendants are known as nago, lucumí, yarriba, queto, egba, ijexá, èfon, etc. in countries like Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Haiti, and other territories of the American continent.

In the year 2018, it will be the turn of Latin America and, aware of the importance and centrality of Brazil in the Afro-Latin American scenario, King Ooni Ogunwusi decided to start this tour through Brazil, choosing Bahia as the spearhead symbolic of this endeavor.
