Dear friends
The third WSF National Level Consultation meeting was successfully held on 3rd August 2013 at ICSA center, Chennai. There were sixty six participants representing sixty organizations from 11 states participated in the consultation meeting.
The following agendas were discussed in the meeting
Ø What should be the form of Social Forum in India
Ø When could be the possible Social Forum event
After presentations on the history and current status of the WSF, participants from various States narrated the experience of the social forum process in India and the need to have a Forum at the earliest in India, given the political mood. There were reports of preparatory meetings in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and UP., and also support from Nepal. Some national alliances and trade union federations have also pledged their active participation in the forthcoming WSF event and its mobilization process.
After much discussion there were recommendations for World Social Forum, Indian Social Forum, South Asian Social Forum, Asian Social forum, Asia Pacific Social forum and Global South Social Forum. It was clearly explained that the World Social Forum could be held only in 2015 and if we want to we need to propose this to the international committee at the earliest.
Everyone present was in favour of India being the venue for the next World Social Forum in 2015.
It was also unanimously suggested that an Asian Social Forum be organsied in 2014 January Feb. in India.
There were a proposal for Chennai from the delegates form Chennai, and there were others who proposed for Lucknow, Patna, Jaipur, Delhi. The discussion on the venue was not on the agenda and there was no decision on this. This was deferred for the next meeting.
The next national level consultation was fixed for 8th of September @ Lucknow. It was decided that the discussion on the venue for the Asian Social Forum should be taken up there. The meeting will also discuss focus of the event and also get more detailed updates of the process in the different states. It was felt that the meeting should be for a full day. Representatives from regions who want to hold the future Forum events should be asked to come prepared with rigorously worked out proposals and basic background work such as approaching main organizations in the city and region of the proposed venue, survey and scrutiny of the proposed sites, based on criteria that we had worked out while preparing for 2003, 2004 and 2006 events. The criteria should be sent out on the list. In the Lucknow meeting the committees for taking the process further will have to be set up.
The participants from Gujarat proposed to host the next national level planning meeting at Ahmedabad, after the Lucknow meeting.
