Video  Forum Group

Facilitating the production and exchange of videos on the World Social Forum universe: events, process, movements, themes, etc.

Main tool:

proposal by FocusPuller/Accesso

This projects is the continuity of the Comunication Sharing Project proposed for the Belem's forum that has involved different media of  Communication: Radio, TV , Free Media, Internet, News and video website.
The goal idea it is to repeat the similar initiatives done during previous forums, as Florence, Mumbai, TV Forum in Porto Alegre, Manaus 2005 , Belem 2009 and others, where tv professional groups and international videoactivists have realized and distributed images of the WSF in a collective way.

We propose the facilitation for the creation of a team of different video crews that will take care of the production of daily video Highlights of 15 minute lenghth to distribute to the wsftv and other Internet site , and by satellite to public and independent TV daily.

Daily highlights production to distribute to the international television circuite

It is undeniable the importance of distributing highlights for mainstream Tvs. A daily 15 minute Highlight is sufficent for Tvs to have material to build up a news about Social Forum
To allow all video crews to partecipate to this opportinity, it is very important that all groups  must produce a good image standard for the broadcasting schedule ( specific seminar can be programmed before the event)

Television Satellite UP-link.
For the distribution to the Television and to Eurovision net,  we propose to use a satellite uplink. This is the most relaible and efficient tool for TVnews transmittion and although it is not  inexpensive, it permits the Forum organizers to invite International TVs to be physically present at the event ( TVs are more likely to send a crew if they know the uplink satellite is available).
Country by country we have to check its supplier cost.
An alternative to the uplink satellite is a internet wide band ( quanti K? o come si indica?) to reach a FTP folder available for the Tvs to download material.

WSFTV and Expandido.
The Highlight and other video material will be uploaded  on wsftv.net  to reinforce the Forum Expanded and to give a chance to the people not present,  to join the initiatives in the different cities around the world  with the possibility to have daily images from the event.

World Feed ( distributed by Eurovision)
In addition we believe that the system of World Feed should be used as in previous forums in Porto Alegre, Manaus, India, Bamako, Nairobi, GDA2008 and Belem2009. This system of net distribution reaches more than 150 pubblic TVs around the world.

WSFTV www.wsftv.net, was created to give visibility and connect people and communities across the globe, through video,to the events of the WSF Global Day of Action in 2008. Today, this project has been successful in bringing together videos from many events in many countries around issues of social justice movements.

The starting idea was to create a digital space, a hub of videos linked to other sites in the FSM, to build an ARCHIVE of video productions of civil society movements and related issues and events of the social forum to share and distribute.
The original goal remains, which is mainly to collect and distribute the clips filmed during world social forum events, this happens at different levels:

    •    for global partecipants and activists an available VIDEO MEMORY ARCHIVE is of importance as for an Expanded WSF and  for  downloading videos

for projection and discussion during the meetings of the movement

    •    For tv broadcast to download videos in high quality, mass-media use via dedicated server access; Also, during the Social Forum in Belem 2009,

WSFTV has produced 4 video highlights of 10 minutes each, for daily distribution via satellite for the international circuit television of the World

In anticipation of future mobilizations we believe in the need to participate actively in the communication and dissemination of wsf content, in collaboration with the organizers of local social forum events and mass movement organizations.

The development of www.wsftv.net is in our opinion the creation of a Web Portal Community for the collection, archiving, and distribution of multimedia products on demand, as it is integrated with other sites coordinated and facilitated by the communications commission  of the World Social Forum International Council.
WSFTV intends to be a free space within the network as an alternative to Youtube, which uses proprietary software, controls user content, perpetuates the hierarchy of copyright and fair use laws, and displays huge billboard advertising. The idea is to be available for the movement to facilitate the distribution and sharing of video without these intrusions.

We believe it is important to consolidate and expand the site www.wsftv imagining the possibility of working in groups in several parts of the world to facilitate the work of production, post production, catalogation and distribution of contents.

Actions toward consolidation:

    1.    General management in order to ensure the maintenance and the technical functionality of the site
    2.    Ensure the production of content for major international events.
    3.    Activate and map groups capable of independently organize productions using wsftv.net as a tool for content delivery and organize local media                  activists.
    4.    Promote the visibility of the site to expand the number of new entrants
    5.    Possibility to make donations available on the site

Actions toward development:

    1.    Expand wsftv project to include local organizers that represent local social forum events to contribute to the growth of this project as a way to fulfill its goals within the WSF process. Also, there are other opportunities for collaboration. Projects in universities and trade unions are already working to systematizing and archiving media production of social movements and civil society. Some contacts have already been opened but many more can be made allies in collaboration.
    2.    Create an editorial staff that can systematicaly and continuously dedicate time for recording material and updating the site and making it accessible and enjoyable by keeping fresh and interesting the contents of the portal.
    3.    Need of translation  (with subtitles or voiceover) video content. We are evaluating some ideas about how to attach voiceover in multiple languages to the videos.

    4.    Facilitate the creation of a web community of partecipants that works for the production of content, the technical management and development of the site and the translations.
    5.    Seek possible partnership with other information structures on the Web

    •    software development and maintenance site

    •    General Video Production (air-food-lodging + daily minimum for 2 operators)

    •    archive cataloging, editing content

    •    development and creation of distribution networks

WSF 2009

More than 80 videos have been collected on the Mobilisation week in January - and others are being added. High quality videos for broadcast have been produced in several countries and edited for the Worldfeed of Eurovision, which was distributed via satellite to over 300 public tvs. A partial collaboration with Al Jazeera and Telesur, together with Arcoiris.tv made it possible to cover some of the most relevant events. Other televisions (such as Mexican and Brasilian state and commercial tv) covered local events. A new website for video exchange was set up in a short time: www.wsftv.net

Public screenings of events around the world have been done thanks to the possibility of downloading videos. This is also a visual memory tool.

- Strengthen and expand video team
- Collect video memory of wsf
- Relaunch the campaign for 1 minute video towards Belem.
- Stimulate public screenings with wsftv.net video bank to communicate about wsf and towards/during Belem
- Work on satellite distribution
