Proposal for a virtual forum on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the WSF - January 2021

The celebration of the 20th anniversary of the WSF in January 2021 is a moral and political obligation. Meetings in recent months with social movements around the world have confirmed that the WSF 'brand' is still alive and that there is a @1 demand for strong action in these times of democratic, economic, ecological, social, geopolitical, and health crisis.

Every crisis is also an opportunity. In this case, the proposal could be to organize a virtual forum in January 2021 which at the same time would be the starting point for a real forum in January 2022, possibly in Mexico City.

In this way we could develop a true process of @2 coordination, agglutination and convergence during the year 2021.

The proposal is to organize a whole week, 6 days, with each day a webinar of two or three hours, @3 around 6 thematic spaces.

If some movements want to self-organize other webinars on specific topics, they can always do so. But the important point would be that the 6 thematic spaces are accessible to everyone and they @4 do not coincide.

The virtual forum would then be a combination of an open space with self-organised activities, @5 next to a series of webinars organised by the WSF or the facilitating committee; It is a step back to our first years as forum when this was quite traditional.

@5B The 6 thematic spaces would be:

1. Thematic space CLIMATE CHANGE / ECOLOGY

Thematic axes: Water, natural resources, megaprojects, extractivism ...

2. Thematic space PEACE AND WAR

Thematic axes: geopolitics, militarization, refugees and migrations ...

3.Thematic space DEMOCRACY

Fascism, populism, authoritarianism, fundamentalism, religions, civil and political rights ...

4. SOCIAL JUSTICE thematic space

Thematic axes: economic, social and cultural rights: social protection, culture, knowledge, communication, migration ...

5. Thematic space ECONOMIC JUSTICE

Thematic axes: Social and solidarity economy, transformative, the commons, multinationals, international financial organizations, development, corruption and tax evasion, the financial system, trade ...

6. SOCIETY and DIVERSITY thematic space

Thematic axes: Gender, feminism, feminicides, racism, indigenous peoples

@6 It is obviouswe cannot decide on the thematic axes now. @7 They will be the result of the proposals of the participants to the forum, and then of the agglutination. But it is possible to propose a general framework within which these proposals will be framed. @8 This framework can also serve for convergences and coordination. What is mentioned here as 'thematic axes' are only examples.

It should be possible that @9 for some thematic spaces, coordination could be a task of the thematic forums, such as on social justice, climate change, alternative economy, etc.

The task would be, for each space, to @10 gather some panelists from the different possible ‘axes’. It is obvious that the 'topics' mentioned here are interconnected, which would make organizing these webinars easier. But the condition would be that they all be pluralistic, that is, they bring together different currentsof thinkingwithin the same space.

At the same time, these 6 webinars could be used to @11 indicate to social movements which are the great issues of today and which are the great currents of progressive thought. It is obvious that not everyone agrees withonesingle thought about feminism, about the climate, about social protection, about alternative economics. Hence the necessary pluralism.

@12 Each thematic space will need at least two people for the organization and coordination work.

From these webinars and their @13 results, a @14 work of exploration, agglutination and convergence can begin towards January 2022. In this way we can prevent movements and networks from @15coming to the forumjustto meet with each other.

@16This forum would then be the result of a true process of contacts and exchanges that can lead to a true convergence, not to arrive at a single thought but to try to @17 find what the movements working in the same sector have in common,as well asinterconnections between different spaces.

This formula combin es the usual open space and is combined with an @18 orientation work by the WSF, just as we did in the first years of the WSF.

It seems to me that we no longer need a forum of 50 or 100,000 participants.@19 If the forum is organized and prepared well, ten thousand would already be an excellent result. A part of the activities can still be @20 digitized.

Very interesting, Francine. Contribute to the idea of @ 21 an online Forum with large panels and self-managed activities. Participating in the same exercise, I believe that the debate on cybersociety - disputes, control and digital horizons, fundamental in the current confrontations and transformations, would have to be @ 22 on a seventh day, assuming that six other issues are approved. Another question to ponder is the idea of @ 23 bringing together the immense struggles of diversity at one table. I remember the great women's assemblies in the history of the WSF and the powerful anti-racist struggles of today. @ 24 Other times we managed to get together on a thematic axis and certainly diversity must be represented in each of the panels. These are the good and difficult @ 25 exercises of the WSF. Her message touches the sentiment of the @ 26 FSM in motion. Rita

I react to the thematic discussion proposal; if we really want to introduce a break for a substantial change, we should perhaps think about the themes.

I am dismayed to see for the xth time, racism put in society and diversity

the question of structural racism which has nothing to do with the generic term racism under which everything is dissolved;

structural racism is to be linked with the capitalist system which could only exist because structural racism provided it with the weapons and the founding bases.

If we have to talk about structural racism, we have to deal with it under the theme of "war and peace"; because this structural racism authorized / allowed by the great discoveries, more exactly the greatest catastrophe lived by humanity, allowed the establishment of a permanent war, of strong or of lesser intensity, against the peoples.

Of course, I understand that these are only proposals to initiate the debate but this question is so fundamental for a decolonial change that we must stop repeating which leads us to a finding of virtual failure ... .

in solidarity Mireille
