You are invited to join the March 10th Media and Technology Convergence that will bring together free media makers, including autonomous and alternative media activists, journalists, hackers, academic researchers, etc, who are attending and/or organizing events around the upcoming World Social Forum (WSF).

The WSF an international meeting of civil society that brings together tens of thousands participants from social movements, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots collectives to cultivate alternatives to the current economic model and provide opportunities to collaboratively build alternative global politics. The next WSF will be held in Montreal between August 9th and 14th 2016(http://fsm2016.org).

Media and technology issues have been given a varying importance in the WSF gatherings. In past social forums, independent media press rooms were put in place to support alternative coverage of the WSF. Workshops and panels were also organized about thematics such as media and power, Internet governance, and digital surveillance. Additionally, since 2009, a “thematic forum” called the World Forum on Free Media (or WFFM - http://www.fmml.net) has been created, which will gather for its 5th edition during the upcoming WSF.

In preparation for the WSF in Montreal, the Local Organizing Committee of this year’s WFFM is inviting organizations and individuals active on issues of media and technology to attend this first convergence. Apart from presenting the WFFM, this event will serve as a meeting place for people to know each other and to coordinate their activities. Alternative media coverage of the WSF will also be on the agenda. We expect this collaborative meeting will strengthen WSF activities related to media and technology.

Depuis lors, les codes et les concepts développés par les militant.e.s de la technologie et les médias activistes du réseau mondial Indymedia ont été détournés par l'économie capitaliste qui a développé des interfaces dont l'unique motif est le profit. Les militant.e.s comptent maintenant sur ces outils à une échelle qui surpasse sans précédent ce qu'Indymedia a jadis reçu à faciliter. En conséquence, nous assistons à la massification simultanée des médias des mouvements sociaux, et à la montée de la surveillance coordonnée à une échelle inimaginable il y a seulement dix ans. À partir de maintenant, ces deux tendances se chevauchent. Pourtant, les militant.e.s de la technologie persistent a « hacker » le rôle degardien.ne que les médias sociaux corporatifs se sont approprié. Les solutions de contournement et d'alternatives en développement ou existant sont multiples, y compris le "Crabgrass," de Riseup, le "Social" de Mayfirst / PeopleLink et les divers "nuages" militants, entre autres. Ces outils permettent aux utilisatrices et utilisateurs de bénéficier d'un type un peu similaire aux médias sociaux, mais sans faciliter l'exploitation à but lucratif des données personnelles ou des réseaux. Les médias activistes et les militant.e.s de la technologie basés à Tiohtià: le territoire Mohawk non cédé autrement connu comme Montréal (Québec, Canada) font des préparatifs pour accueillir le Forum Mondial des Médias Libres (FMML) qui débutera le 7 août, 2016, deux jours avant le Forum social mondial (FSM 2016) à Montréal. Le comité organisateur local du FMML invite les médias activistes et les militant.e.s de la technologie à converger à Montréal pour aborder les questions des médias et de la technologie sous l'angle de la décolonisation ainsi qu'envisager des collaborations possibles sur le plan des innovations liées aux médias et à la technologie, et ce, dans un environnement multiplateforme et numérique. Nous espérons que cette conversation inclura une discussion sur la pertinence d'Indymedia aujourd'hui. DISCUSSION DURING the First Free Media and Technology Convergence In preparation of the World Social Forum 2016 - August 9-14 (fsm2016.org) and the 5th edition of the World Forum on Free Media (fmml.net) March 10, 2016 at 6pm (doors open at 5h30pm) 3720, Avenue du Parc, second floor, Montreal (Alternatives offices) Almost a decade before the emergence of Social Media, Indymedia developed a platform on which anyone with Internet access and a computer could post audio, video, and print articles online. Since then, the codes and concepts developed by Indymedia's global network of tech workers and grassroots media organizers have repeatedly been hijacked by the capitalist economy to develop user interfaces cohesive with profit motives. Activists now rely on these corporate social media tools at a scale far beyond what Indymedia ever facilitated. As a result we are seeing the simultaneous massification of social movement media, and the rise of coordinated surveillance at a scale unimaginable only a decade ago. As of now, these two trends are fused. Yet grassroots tech workers are persisting in hacking at the gatekeeping role that this corporate Social Media have abrogated for themselves. Multiple workarounds and alternatives are currently being produced or released, including Riseup’s “Crabgrass,” Mayfirst/Peoplelink’s “Social,” and various activist-run "clouds." These resources allow users to benefit from corporate social media types of online relations without facilitating the for-profit exploitation of personal or network data. Media and technology activists based in Tiohtià:ke unceded Mohawk territory otherwise known as Montreal (Quebec, Canada) are making preparations to host the World Forum of Free Media (WFFM) opening August 7, 2016, two days before the World Social Forum in Montreal. The Local Organizing Committee for the WFFM is inviting media and technology activists to converge in Montreal to address decolonizing media and technology while debating challenges and collaborating on innovations related to media and technology in a multi-platform and digital environment. We hope this conversation will include a discussion of the continued relevance of Indymedia. Some may perceive aspects of Indymedia are now irrelevant to the global social justice movement; however, the influence of the working relationships that were built during its heyday remain strong. In Montreal this August, we have an opportunity to reignite what has been its most essential quality: an international network of channels offering people-to-people connections committed to coordinating global mobilization of grassroots resistance to the excesses of multinationals and neo-colonial policies and institutions. This call goes out to all those individuals and collectives who were impacted by the Indymedia movement to converge in Montreal, as well as at related events leading up to Montreal, to discuss what an “Indymedia reboot” could entail in this era of corporatized social media.
