Thematic Social Forum on Mining and Extractivist Economy

O Fórum Social Temático terá lugar de 12 a 15 de novembro de 2018, em Joanesburgo, África do Sul, marcando 6 anos do Massacre de Marikana.

 

1.     In the last years, social movements resisting the extractive model and corporations related to the expansion of mining, organized seminars and workshops to debate and build articulations in many events, as well as in the World Social Forums.Encouraged by previous initiatives, but conscious of its limits, a coalition of networks, social movements and NGOs propose to hold a Thematic Social Forum on Mining and Extractivist Economy, to contribute to broadening the interaction of a local, national and international resistances and struggles.

Inspired by the WSF process, we want to

  • stimulate analysis, share and seek strategies to generate and disseminate an alternative narrative on the impact of mining on affected communities and strengthen struggles.
  • Encourage dialogue between mining workers and local communities, which resist to mining and are accused of restricting local jobs.
  • Broaden connections between communities affected by the same company, which operates in many different countries, to create networks of negotiation, confrontation and resistance.
  • Find ways to articulate and learn from different affected actors: women, peasants, indigenous people, traditional communities, trade unionists and local churches.
  • Face the urgent need to build concrete alternatives and seek further solutions to extractivism.
  • Understand the expansion of mining and its impacts within the framework of the extractive economy, the effects on climate change, and build alliances with those working against agribusiness, predatory fishing, and forest exploitation.

 

Fórum Social Temático sobre Mineração e Economia Extrativista

O Fórum Social Temático terá lugar de 12 a 15 de novembro de 2018, em Joanesburgo, África do Sul, marcando 6 anos do Massacre de Marikana.

 Nos últimos anos, movimentos sociais que resistem ao modelo extrativo e às corporações ligadas à expansão da mineração, organizaram seminários e workshops para debater e construir articulações em muitos eventos, bem como nos Fóruns Sociais Mundiais.

Encorajados por iniciativas anteriores, mas conscientes de suas limitações, uma coalizão de redes, movimentos sociais e ONGs propõe realizar um Fórum Social Temático sobre Mineração e Economia Extrativista, para contribuir e ampliar a interação de resistências e lutas locais, nacionais e internacionais.

Inspirados pelo processo do FSM, queremos

  • estimular a análise, compartilhar e buscar estratégias para gerar e divulgar uma narrativa alternativa sobre o impacto da mineração em comunidades afetadas e fortalecer as lutas.
  • Incentivar o diálogo entre trabalhadores mineiros e comunidades locais, que resistem à mineração e são acusadas de restringir empregos locais.
  • Ampliar as conexões entre as comunidades afetadas por uma mesma empresa, que atua em diversos países, para criar redes de negociação, confrontação e resistência.
  • Encontrar maneiras de articular e aprender com diferentes atores afetados: mulheres, camponeses, povos indígenas, comunidades tradicionais, sindicalistas e igrejas locais.
  • Enfrentar a necessidade urgente de construir alternativas concretas e procurar novas soluções para o extrativismo.
  • Entender a expansão da mineração e seus impactos no âmbito da economia extrativa, os efeitos sobre as mudanças climáticas, e construir alianças com aqueles que trabalham contra o agronegócio, pesca predatória e exploração florestal.
