What is the WSF? What do you like about the WSF? What would you change in the WSF? What do you think are the frequent confusions about the WSF? What about your frequent criticisms? We consider the WSF as a space of convergence of the citizens 'struggles of the world, a moment of construction of citizens' alternatives against capitalism and its glaring and inherent inequalities all over the world. Citizen engagement, the activism of social actors from all sides (from the North, like those from the South). Added to this is her strong capacity for proposal and her alternatives adapted to the realities of each struggle she carries. The arrangement of the Council and the secretariat are two organs which in principle should complement each other in action. The weakness of the WSF is the lack of means of follow-up but also the time between 2 editions of the WSF.

Where is the WSF going? What is your vision of the WSF? What is the potential of the WSF? With the COVID - 19 virus pandemic, the WSF is at a decisive turning point in its (re) qualification process. Increasingly growing inequalities, dysfunctional health systems in both the North and the South (the whole issue of social security and protection for workers, youth unemployment, climate change and its consequences). pangs, the issue of human trafficking, the phenomenon of migration and its devastation in the Mediterranean, the resurgence of coups d'état in West Africa and the plunder of natural resources which feeds wars and insecurity in some countries in Africa (DRC), in Latin America (Colombia), in Asia (Afghanistan)… More than ever, the WSF finds its meaning in its different but requires new approaches to action and intervention, to move from reflection to action by being part of the United Nations agenda as an observer and actor through the Organizations that identify with it.

What can we say to the newcomers who ask that we, participants in the WSF space, can? How to get involved To newcomers, the WSF remains in our humble opinion a space open to all and therefore the contribution of all actors is welcome, according to the specialties or specificities of each actor.

How does the WSF process work? Who decides what? What is the meaning of “Facilitation in the WSF process?” What is the dynamics of the FSC? The WSF process works with the Stakeholders Assembly which establishes the FSC Council and a flexible and flexible secretariat. Rather, it is the relationship between the Council and the Secretariat that must be well defined by specifying the roles and responsibilities of each of these two bodies. In this perspective, the Facilitation of the WSF process would amount to saying “the coordination of reflection pools either“ by geographical area ”, or“ by thematic ”or either“ by country ”. And all in a well-coordinated agenda over time.

In this age of digitalization and communication technologies, for more impact, create "WhatsApp groups", animate and update the WSF site, invade social media for more visibility and connectivity. But a major challenge, organizations must also be in tune with the WSF.

For greater consistency and decentralization, a minimum of technical equipment (computers, overhead projectors, cameras and other related tools must be provided to each facilitation pool, be it thematic, geographic or territorial.

What are the main problems for promoters? How can WSF implementations balance coherence and decentralization? How can the WSF process reach a larger scale? What are your suggestions for the next sessions of the FORUMCONNECT series?

What is your concrete experience of facilitating a forum space / process in your country / region and what lessons can you share about it?

The Congolese Social Forum: quid from its 4th edition from August 28 to 30, 2016

1. What is the Congolese Social Forum, The Congolese Social Forum, a space for convergences, exchanges, dialogue and questioning of social and political actors, aims to allow the various social movements and the population to reflect on the burning issues of current affairs and their living conditions. It is a place for sharing experiences and proposals for alternative solutions for the improvement of policies and practices for the real dignity of the sons and daughters of the DRC. It will therefore be a question of proposing constructed alternative solutions. in a participatory manner with a view to improving social, economic and political governance; and thus promote the emergence of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the basis of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted last September in New York.

SET OF GENERIC QUESTIONS "a dialogue between facilitators of social forum processes"

Dumezweni Dlamini born and based in the Kingdom of Eswatini.  a Human Rights Activist. A founder member of a number of Social Movements in Eswatini and in the Southern Africa Region. A Committee member in the Southern Africa People's Solidarity Network (SAPSN). also a member of the international movement, the People's Dialogue (PD)

What is the WSF to you? What do you like about the WSF? What would you change about the WSF? What do you think are frequent confusions about WSF? and frequent critiques?

The WSF I found it to be a space which unites or globalizes people of the world on an effort to break the notion that makes us to look at each other from our different countries and continents as aliens to each each other, as if the life we live, problems we face etc is different, whereas not.

What I found so interesting about the space is that it's a practical demonstration of a ONE WORLD ONE PEOPLE. No discrimination of whatever form, but instead it is a forum where we learn from each other and come to one understanding of the importance of the world and how it should be taken care of.

There wouldn't be much I would like to change about the WSF, besides appreciating that it is still a fairly new forum, that still needs to be allowed to grow, which growth is where we realize areas where we are to improve it. One of which is the strengthening of the Committee's in making sure they have ample time to deliberate on their mandates, and put their resolutions in action.

As for now, and again raised concerns from people, is the forum being a talk show. Where exactly it's heading to, and how concretely it suggests, such shall change the world. Basically, I attribute these concerns and "confusion" to the fact that it's still a forum at its infant stage, which of course is subjected to quite a number of challenges.

BUT ours as it is, our forum created by us, we need to be less on critics, and be more on how we could build a strong WSF. We should always need to have a session where we would look at the WSF and its evolution. Such would also assist newcomers to understand the WSF and its inception.

Where is the WSF going? What is your vision for the WSF? What is the potential of WSF?

The WSF, provided it is given the support financially and through strengthening its Committees, as mentioned above, it could bring together a united and peaceful loving people of the world. And that is same as my vision of the WSF.

It has a huge potential to fight against any sorts of injustices around the world, as when we are united, there would be no space to be exploited by multinational companies for example. No space for the destroying of our mother earth, causing the change of climate in healing itself in protecting us and the environment.

What to say to newcomers asking : what can we, participants, do in WSF space? How do we get involved? What are the dynamics of the WSF?

Firstly, it would be to say to newcomers that they should take some time to understand the WSF space. Ask about where it is not clear, and observe how things are done, and as well as making suggestions. However, what is of paramount importance is to know and understand the WSF Charter of Principles as adopted in Porto Alegre en 2001.

? How does the WSF process operate ? Who decides what ? Who funds what?- What is the meaning of "facilitation" in the WSF process? - What are the main issues for WSF promoters /facilitators ? How can WSF implementations balance coherence and decentralization? How can the WSF process reach a bigger scale

The WSF is so much dependant on the operations of its different commissions in the International Council. It is the work done by the IC members that ensures a well planned, effective and successful WSF. Their IC meeting prior to the forum is very important.

All Commissions during the IC meetings come up with their suggestions, which, when presented before the house, are then deliberated by the whole IC together, which is where such is agreed, and put in one master plan for implementation.

During the WSF itself, it is the different groups from the different thematic areas that decide on what they agreed on and how they will do it.

When it comes to funding, progressive funding institutions and at times governments fund the forum and some of its activities. Other funders fund areas or thematic areas where they have interest. Some funding organizations have also abused or gone against the principles of the forum and began to use it as a forum to promote things which are against our founding principles. Vigilant movements usually stand up right in the forum and challenge that. We have seen at times that such challenges become violent.

Facilitation in the WSF is more like sharing your organisational, at times your personal and or academic experience in that particular field. It is more like driving a platform where the expectations is that all movements in attendance should share for purposes of learning from each other and form networks and forging joint programs.

Issues which are usually promoted are grassroots struggles, struggles on climate justice, socio-economic, land, governance, human right etc.

Issues discussed at WSF could be coherent and be implemented easier only if we can have financial support for the meetings of the IC as well as supporting the plans for the different convergences.

For the WSF reaching a bigger scale is nothing else besides the support of the Mobilizing Commission plan in recruiting more movements from the world. As well as ensuring the existence and function of the segments of the WSF such as ASF, South America, East Africa and Asia, SASF ~in Southern Africa etc.

What are your suggestions for next sessions of the FORUMCONNECT series ?

What can we do to have a Forum under such COVID~19 environment?

Thanks for the input -  it would be good  also to have some testimony about the facilitation of southern africa social forum

Where is the WSF going? What is your vision of the WSF? What is the potential of the WSF?

In this context of neoliberal globalization, globalization of monopolization, exclusion and impoverishment of vulnerable layers, the alter-globalization movement of the World Social Forum remains an alternative to give voice to the voiceless, to rebalance injustices, inequalities, and allow the people of the world, oppressed by this neoliberal globalization, to regain their freedom, to find their means, to find their resources, and to actively participate in participatory governance, especially in the countries of the South.

This is why for us the movement of the Social Forum remains an urgent necessity that must be revived and reorganized, because, more and more, there is no longer any alternative in the neoliberal political governance of the world.

To see the WSF, if we take into account what we have just said earlier, and the potential existing at the level of youth movements, citizens' movements, both in the north and in the south, we see that the FSM is heading towards a bright future; if we manage to organize ourselves better, bring together synergies better here and there, at the level of youth dynamics, women's dynamics, peasant dynamics, to reconstitute the solid base of alter-globalization citizenship, and for that we need to have a direction snas very organized doubt.

It is therefore in the direction of seeing how to restructure the WSF, relocating the country forums, relocating the sub-regional forums in West Africa, North Africa, Europe Africa Asia etc. and going in the direction of holding a large meeting of the international committee coordination somewhere in a country to reinvent a new agenda, and start afresh on a new basis.

Thank you for the input - it would also be good to have a testimonial on your experience of facilitating the Senegalese social forum process with the achievements and difficulties

SET OF GENERIC QUESTIONS "a dialogue between facilitators of social forum processes"

  • What is the WSF to you? What do you like about the WSF? What would you change about the WSF? What do you think are frequent confusions about WSF? and frequent critiques?

  • Where is the WSF going? What is your vision for the WSF? What is the potential of WSF?

  • What to say to newcomers asking : what can we, participants, do in WSF space? How do we get involved? What are the dynamics of the WSF?

  • How does the WSF process operate ? Who decides what ? Who funds what?- What is the meaning of "facilitation" in the WSF process? - What are the main issues for WSF promoters /facilitators ? How can WSF implementations balance coherence and decentralization? How can the WSF process reach a bigger scale?

  • What are your suggestions for next sessions of the FORUMCONNECT series ?

What is the WSF to you?
The WSF to me is a very progressive space  for learning and sharing. It's an open space of connection between strategic and political allies who denounce all  forms of discrimination and inequality.

What do you like about the WSF?
What I like about WSF is that it gives a lot of hope  through the many alternatives that social activists bring on board..look at it's tag line.."Another world is possible" so powerful that it gives people the urge and.morale to carry on the fight. I like it because it's a platform to name and give a chance for change. Those that violate others have no space within this progressive space.

What would you change about the WSF?
I would include more stakeholders in the coordination. And ensure sub coordination teams in the regions do the mobilisation and sensitization of the WSF.

What do you think are frequent confusions about WSF?
One of the evident confusion is still accepting support from some organisations which would not have the same ideology/ vision as the WSF. Some organisations seek support from "donors" who get funds from some of the organisations that led social movements to be where we are today i.e WB...How possible is it to denounce in one voice?

and frequent critiques same as above
