WSF2009 ENLARGES ITS TERRITORY

Cities preparing activities for WSF2009 as of Jan 1st, and more are joining!
Come to the Belem Expanded Space in Belem

and participate in Internet connections with WSF2009 decentralized activities
The 2009 edition of the World Social Forum opens a new way of participation for movements, entities and civil society organizations that won't come to the centralized event in Belem and want to express their active participation in the WSF process. The Global Day of Action of 2008 started a dynamics of activities of various type towards another possible world in all the regions of the world, expanding the forum proposal. From this experience, it was defined that decentralized activities linked to the forum event held in Amazonia would be part of WSF2009.
Decentralized activities are local social forums events, conferences, street actions, civil society meetings, open fairs and gatherings of various kinds. They include moments of connection amongst them and with groups present in Belem through internet (e.g. text and audio chats or video conferences), telephone conversation, collective listening of radio broadcast, collective screening of videos. Belem Expanded has been prepared in a networking website provided by WSF commu-nication commission. www.openfsm.net is a permanent tool for those who adhere to the charter of principles of the WSF, to discuss issues of common interest, build convergences, plan actions!

The local group of LAONF (Iraqi nonviolent movement) organizes in the city of Falluja a meeting between tribe leaders to promote peace among their people. It wishes to connect with peace activist around the world to discuss how to promote the culture of nonviolence and is willing to talk about civil protests against US forces in Falluja.

FAL (France Amérique latine), ATTAC, CADTM and Confédération paysanne hold local activities that give visibility to the WSF answers to the Financial Crisis. They also project documentaries and organize a public gathering on a main square.

Various activities during WSF2009 are being prepared by 70 organizations in different cities, including a main one in Karachi.
Dem. Rep. of Congo
The Secretariat of Forum Social Congolais is organizing moments for participation in the WSF of civil society in Kinshasa. CENADEP hosts a group of young people from the peripheries of the city, connecting each day of the WSF with the delegates from Congo and others in Belem.

The Mallorca Social Forum organizes an activity in preparation of the 3rd local forum (that will take place on February 12-15), centered on participatory management of public services as citizens' right. They connect with Belem and groups working on public services.
Sweden
ATTAC, ABF (the Workers’ Educational Association), JAK bank and Glokala folkhögskolan, organize a local meeting to debate alternative responses to the financial crisis: Will we restore the speculation economy and carry on with business as usual ? - or should we seize this moment and build a fair and sustainable society?

The Comité Promotor del FSM in Mexico issued a national call for decentralized activities in order to expand and deepen the “Mexican chapter” of the WSF, establish ties with groups and movements inside and outside the country, articulate local and global agendas through joint debates, promote internet technology to support and widen mobilization. The program of activities in Mexico City includes two intense days of activities, a parallel children's forum and a closing day to collect proposals and celebrate. May First / People Link organize two activities for WSF2009. The first is a Collaborative Democracy Workshop taking place simultaneously in Belem and four other cities on the topic of the economic crisis; participants in all four cities will collaboratively write an economic agenda for the progressive left. The second activity is a screening of a documentary on the Cherokee Legacy and discussion on indigenous people in the US.

A local committee organizes the Stuttgart Open Fair 2009 in the main public square: a civil Society “market place” with information stands, exhibitions, educational and arts activities on the theme of “New Energy for another World”, but also “Economy of domination versus solidarity economy” and “Climate for peace and justice”.
