PUBLIC STATEMENT TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY FROM ORGANIZATIONS AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS THAT ACT IN THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM - WSF IN BRAZIL AND AROUND THE WORLD

The world has spectated, in past years, a conservative wave against all and any defence of social agendas, environmental protection, strengthening of regional cultures or of any new global economic order that combats the causes of inequality.

In light of this regressive cycle, the people’s fight, led mainly by women, by black people, by the youth, students, intellectuals, and workers, has promoted resistance movements and built alternatives capable of shaping a new lifestyle for human beings between themselves and their relation with nature.

Latin America has been, in past years, a privileged territory, in resistance struggles as well as the consolidation of alternatives. These processes, along with the shift of the North American empire’s foreign policy, have been suffering attacks in all countries where people have dared to rebel against inequality and the injustices promoted by the neoliberal capitalist model.

Attempts of coups were overcome in Venezuela, Equator, and Bolivia. Coup attempts were carried out in Honduras and Paraguay, and more recently, with direct support from the international financial system, the peronist candidacy was defeated in the ballot box in Argentina in the election of an integrist government.

It is important to emphasize that all these crisis and coups in Latin America are based on the active role of media monopolies and oligopolies, which need to be confronted to open room for social resistance voices.

A parliamentary coup is currently under execution in Brazil, with explicit support from grand media corporations, especially Rede Globo, with sectors from the judiciary as the coup’s underwriters breaking the dorsal spine of the democratic state of right built from the hardship of Brazilians’ struggle in the last decades.

Those who have plotted the impeachment are now dismantling the state’s instruments of and for culture, education, human rights, housing, health, retirement, women, black people, indigenous populations, and, in the latest attack, the entire system of public communication.

The organizations and social movements that act in the World Social Forum’s proceedings accuse, before the international community, the political and institutional crisis in which Brazil and Latin America are submerged, alerting that the retrograde movement in the American Continent is in fact a step backwards with global impact, for it attacks not only democratically elected governments, but also an agenda towards the defence of another possible world, capable of refraining a rampant growth model that is taking humanity to the threshold of its extinction.

Brazilian organizations and social movements led by women, by black people, by indigenous peoples, by the populations of urban periphery, by workers, by students, artists, intellectuals and social activists of the most diverse fights and agendas, are out in the streets accusing and resisting retrograde measures and in defence of democracy and freedom of expression. They denounce the backward
attempts to attack the recently achieved social rights and announce to the world that this coup is a background for the international financial system to grasp Brazil’s natural resources, especially the oil discovered in the pre-salt layer and the Amazon Rainforest. National sovereignty and people’s unity is at risk in Latin America.

Given this setting, we members of the International Council of the WSF join the proposal of an International Ethics Court in the next edition of the WSF 2016, in Montreal, to denounce the media political coup that leads to the rupture of democracy with the opening of President Dilma’s impeachment process, not within the Brazilian Constitution’s rules.

Violence and war benefit only the dominators. The general public rebels against unfairness and the violation of their rights. We conclude asserting that we will continue in the streets, accusing the coup in progress in Brazil, fighting for no more regressive measures and for no lesser rights, in support of all who rise for their rights, for freedom, for democracy.

Another world is possible, urgent, and necessary.
