This is a simplified version  - there is one ready with more details accessible in that same page

Extension a general idea –not linked to use of internet

Extension is a general idea : to make the social forum event inclusive to people who are not in Baghdad. This is done "humanly"  by inviting people organize activities abroad on the date of ISF. It is a political decision from ISF committee

The number of solidarity  activities in the world can be 5 10 20 50 depending the capacity to outreach

Invitation to organize anywhere in the world  activity /workshop  linked to Iraq situation  and on topics interesting Iraqis organization,

 And for this “human” extension this you do not need necessarily internet

Then the extension  can be "technical"  using internet  and developing collective remote inter-communication

There are two main tools for this

1/ using video conferencing as we are doing now  to have a two hour discussion between a group in Baghdad and a group anywhere in the world

This discussion can be considered a tele-encounter activity  taking place both in Baghdad and in another place at the same time. There has been many such tele encounter activities organized in earlier forums

2/ using video streaming  to broadcast what is happening in a place to allow more people to remotely participate through text chat while they view the video broadcast - this is called tele -participation

Extension is for before and during the event in Baghdad

Ibraheem : so is the extension only for preparing of the forum or even activities ?

Pierre: no - the extension is also for activities during the event

Ali : yes

Ibraheem : aha this was my idea also

Pierre: for instance if the Baghdad event program is 50 activities - we can imagine that humanly extension will develop another 20/50 activities elsewhere in the world

Ibraheem : i suggested to live-stream the event from Baghdad to the world as well

Enlarged activities

Pierre: and we can imagine that around 20 activities in Baghdad could be live streamed to the people who are in those solidarity event across the world, and others as well of course , but the first are more likely to be really interested

Ibraheem : i got the idea it's a great idea i've been through this thing

Ali : ok

Tele encounter activities

Pierre:  also we can imagine that there can be 10 groups in 10 different places in the world who want to have a collective discussion with 10 /20 Iraqis organizations’ on 10 different topics, and this will make 10 different tele-encounter activities which will be both in Baghdad and elsewhere in the world

These tele encounter activities will be in the Baghdad event program: people in Baghdad can see them in the program see in which room and which time they are taking place and go to attend, as for any other activity in Baghdad

So to summarize :  two technical ways - 1/ videoconferencing  for tele encounters ( and event if the connection is not good as now , we can communicate by audio and by chat ) 2/ video streamin + chat  for tele participaiton /enlarged activiteis from baghdad

Internet quality in cultural center

Ibraheem : for the event days we should get an internet sponsor

Pierre: how is the internet in the Baghdad cultural center? there must be some internet here ?is it good? also there may be  cell phone internet connection   3G keys smartphones etc.. is it good ? the good thing about 3Gkeys is that is allows to capture internet anywhere .. (at least some moments depending the quality of connection) but generally the cable  connection is better .  that is why it is important to check with the Baghdad cultural center technical team

Do we have to videoconference inside the extension team ?

Ibraheem : for me nope it's so clear but my question is this do we need to video conference with you for the preparations

Pierre :it is a good question : there are two reason for videoconferencing ...

1/ exchanging on general organization/preparation of extension and this may be useful and

2/ making tests and first contacts with people that have answered the ISF extended participation invitation, and are willing to get in touch with extension team to test the video stream, or are willing to get in touch with an Iraqi organization to prepare a tele encounter

These moments are very important as they allow to develop a human relationship before the ISF event; if people have already come into contact on occasion of those preparation encounters, they will manage to communicate on the moment of ISF event, whatever the technical difficulties !

Look for internet sponsors

Ali : we are with ibrahim proposal to have internet sponsors bcoz i dont think the cultural center have a good internet connection

Ibraheem : Taif i really need to talk to you :) because in baghdad the internet services are not so good and if there is , then it's not everywhere so my suggestion is in the preparation time you can subscribe in a good internet service in the organization and for the event days we can bring sponsors

Pierre: this i understand ! ....  but as i say .. even if there is only the chat + photos  inter-communication can take place when it is prepared on both sides.

 That is why it is important to start early to  invite people (next week ) and establish contacts with people who are interested by tele encounter and tele participation

Ali : you mean people from abroad?

Ibraheem : Taif so from now until the event where will you always meet or gather ?the place , area manteeqa

Ali : our meetings are in Tammuz karrada

Ibraheem : ok preparation extensions will be from there right ?

Invitation to people abroad

Pierre: yes Ali people form abroad whom you invite to express their interest to prepare a tele encounter with Iraqi organization  or to attend a broadcasted  activity in Baghdad

Ali : you will prepare the invitations?

Pierre - the invitation is being prepared  - it is on the Iraq social forum webpage in English -  the extension will also be reflected in the registration form

Internet again -  many things can be done by simple chat if internet not so good

Pierre: i suggest to test the 3G keys existing and if it is a workable way  you can be sponsored with say 10 /20 keys and allocate them to organizations that want to prepare a tele encounter

Ali : we don't have 3G in Baghdad

Pierre: at Ali - ok then  you need to have  a place where the isf committee meets with internet and  discuss how to have good internet in Baghdad cultural center during the event.

 Pierre : what is important is the desire to have those tele encounters which are moments of collective debate very rich, the tele-encounters can take place even when internet conditions are no so good

Pierre: the tele-participation too if people are ready to have only some images and sound and not a live video and willing to interact by chat text

Ali : ok

Extended activities abroad and in Baghdad are in the same axes as other Baghdad activities  

Ali : the type of activities are enclosed with the ISF axes

Pierre: of course ... as you know the axes draw a general frame and all activities are self organized by Iraqi organization, so if an Iraqi organization want to have a tele encounter with a us veteran organization about the situation in Iraq  - this will fit in the axes

or if another Iraqi organization wants to have a tele-encounter with youth in Tunisia about how they organized wsf2013  this can be also within the axes  etc...

you can as of now invite Iraqi organization to express their interest for tele-encounters and which who and on which topic

the same can be done on the international side , and then the extension team comes into play to help the "marriage" of those intentions

Ali : the us veteran their activities can be under the nonviolence axes

Pierre: exactly .yes axes won’t be a problem:

An experienced responsible person  for the ISF extension team

Pierre Again what is key is the preparation and establishment or relationships before the event between the various actors interested to inter-communicate and this is not a technical task, because everyone uses skype .. it is a political -communicational task

That is why it is very important to create an ISF extension team with experienced organized  taking responsibility for the team well included in the ISF committee

Ali : ok Pierre we will work on deciding whom will be responsible for the extension team  and we will send you the activities of organizations here but we have to collect them first

ISF extension team can Start collecting extensioo intentions of Iraqi organizations

Pierre: you can as of now collect the interest of Iraqi organization  - on which topic they want to tele-exchange/tele encounter with which kind of organization in the world ( some may have already counterparts)

Pierre: yes ...we have three months to help organization in Iraq and abroad  prepare some good specific  tele encounters activities,  and tele participations in some activities held in baghdad

That is why it is important to exchange now on the idea of extension and start collecting extension intentions in Baghdad , and match them .with intention abroad. and support those organizations who want to make it happen, in Iraq and abroad, this is the task of the extension team, and it implies organizing and communication skills, much more than just being conversant with internet technology

Ali : yes this is important, now the committee will leave, they have some appointments, and some will work on having internet sponsors, and we will work on collecting activities from organizations

Pierre: yes  :) it would be great that before 2weeks we have indication of which Iraqi organization are interested to broadcast their activity - toward who  and which organization want to have a tele encounter with who  on which broad topic

This will allow give a concrete turn to the registration forms  -mentionning the first proposal  of tele encounter and tele participation coming from Iraqis organizations

Role of Sfex initiative inside ISF extension team

Pierre: this will give a first round of concrete material  and allow the ISF extension team to start supporting, my role, as part of Social forum extended Initiative -  here http://openfsm.net/projects/sfexintercom/project-home ,  is just to convey the earlier social forum event experience, and support preparation  as part of the ISF extension  team. The basic organizing work  in my opinion need to  be in Baghdad
