     FRANCAIS

    The Iraqi Social Forum began on Thursday 26/09 with a day of open air sports activities and an opening ceremony at the Baghdad University.
    More than 300 persons attended the concerts, sports events, opening speeches.
    It was a very successful day, full of joy and energy. A 5km and 10km race for Sports Against Violence attracted numerous participants, martial arts group made demonstrations (they run a program to teach women self-defence), the international delegation was warmly welcomed, and the Iraqi Social Forum was officially opened.

    Friday 27/09, more than 3000 persons registered for the day's activities!
    This extraordinary turn out exceeded even the most optimistic previsions of the Iraqi organisers. Activities were spread between the Baghdad Cultural House and Quhshla (an Ottoman palace), both located on Mutanabi Street in downtown Baghdad. A very large number of young people came to participate in the cultural events, working groups and musical activities.
    Some very strong sessions took place. The workshop about Freedom of expression was noteworthy: Iraqi activists and journalists spoke very openly and critically of the government, without fear.
    The workshop about the Tigris river campaign (to save the river from the Ilisu dam in Turkey) was also an important step forward for Iraqi civil society, and even representatives from the Iraqi government attended the panel in the public.
    Among the public of the forum were also the governor of Baghdad and numerous members of Parliament, and about 20 internationals from Italy to Bangladesh.

    Today Saturday the forum continues. Follow it on internet livestreaming here: http://iraqsf.org/

    ===============================================
    Le Forum Social Irakien a commencé jeudi 26/09 avec une journée d'activités de plein air et une cérémonie d'ouverture à l'université de Bagdad.
    Plus de 300 personnes ont participé aux concerts, activités sportives, et discours d'ouverture.
    C'était une journée très réussie, pleine de joie et d'énergie. les courses de 5km et 10km pour le Sport Contre la Violence ont attiré de nombreux participants, un groupe d'arts martiaux a fait des démonstrations (ils ont un programme pour apprendre aux femmes l'auto-défense), la délégation internationale a été chaleureusement accueillie, et le Forum Social Irakien a officiellement débuté.

    Vendredi 27/09, plus de 3000 personnes se sont enregistrées pour les activités de la journée !
    Cette participation extraordinaire a dépassé même les prévisions les plus optimistes des organisateurs irakiens. Les activités étaient partagées entre la Baghdad Cultural House et le Quhshla (un palais ottoman), tous les deux situés sur Mutanabi Street au centre de Bagdad. Un très grand nombre de jeunes sont venus participer aux événements culturels, ateliers et activités musicales.
    Des sessions très fortes ont eu lieu. L'atelier sur la liberté d'expression était remarquable: les activistes et journalistes irakiens ont parlé de manière très ouverte et très critique du gouvernement, sans peur. L'atelier sur la campagne pour le fleuve Tigris (pour sauver le fleuve du barrage Ilisu enTurquie) était aussi un pas important pour la société civile irakienne, et même des représentants du gouvernement irakien y ont participé dans le public.
    Parmi le public du forum il y avait aussi le gouverneur de Bagdad et de nombreux parlementaires, et près de 20 internationaux, d'Italie à l'Irak.

    Aujourd'hui samedi le forum continue. Pour le suivre en direct sur internet : http://iraqsf.org/

      I am very happy to be here.  I would like to say I have the greetings of the Mesopotamian Social Forum from Diyarbakir.  You would say Mesopotamia is here but, in our region the Tigris and Euphrates originate.   It is one big geography, with many common cultural characteristics.   I have very deep impressions here, and I have to order them.  I will inform my friends in Diyarbarkir Kurdistan and Turkey.  I will say that, here in Iraq in Baghdad, something new is developing, a power to peace.   Finally I would like to say, as you have now organised the first Iraq Social Forum, I hope that, in future, our two social forums can work better together.
