Dear all,
while travelling to Morocco, I hear that five people of the Iraqi Social Forum organizing committee are reaching Casablanca right now. It seems we've overcome visa problems and you will be able to hear directly from Iraqi activists about the sucess of the first Iraqi Social Forum (Baghdad, 26-28 Sept 2013), so I really thank for their support our friends of FMAS.
I will come instead representing the Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative, the global initiative that aims to strengthen links between the global and the Iraqi social movements and CSOs.
Your find below a statement that we've disseminated after the Iraqi Social Forum, so that you can learn about this process even before the IC meeting begins. It follows in ARABIC, ENGLISH, FRENCH and SPANISH.

المنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي…. نجاح وتأثير في وسط المجتمع المدني
انطلق المنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي الاول في بغداد ، 26 إلى 28 سبتمبر 2013 . وكان هذا المنتدى أول تجمع كبير في العراق استنادا إلى ميثاق ومبادئ المنتدى الاجتماعي العالمي بمشاركة أكثر من 3000 مشارك ، وكان هو أكبر منتدى اجتماعي وطني من أي وقت مضى في العالم العربي . وشملت اعمال المنتدى حوالي 170 الأنشطة، التي تنظمها أكثر من 150 منظمة من المنظمات العراقية ،ودعمت هذه الجهود المبذولة من قبل العشرات من المتطوعين الدوليين من مصر ، تونس ، فلسطين ، تركيا ، بنغلاديش ، إيطاليا ، إسبانيا ، بلجيكا والولايات المتحدة لل عراقيين للتعبير عن تضامنهم مع المجتمع المدني العراقي و دعم تطوير الحركات الاجتماعية في العراق .
وجرى حفل الافتتاح الرسمي للمنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي في جامعة بغداد يوم 26 سبتمبر ، وتبعتها سلسلة من نشاطات ” الرياضة ضد العنف ” بضمنها سباق 5كم ، عروض التايكواندو ، و الرقص التقليدي . اما الأنشطة الرئيسية للمنتدى فكانت في 27 و 28 سبتمبر، والتي شملت ورش عمل وندوات و جلسات عامة ، ومعارض فنية ، وخيام تمثل منظمات وحملات عراقية منوعة ، و أكثر من ذلك بكثير ، وكان مكان المنتدى في المركز الثقافي بغداد و فناء القشلة التاريخية التي تطل على نهر دجلة . وكان الشباب العراقي بطل الرواية في المنتدى كله ، والمشاركة بحماس في جميع الأحداث و تنظيم أكبر التجمعات .
وكانت المشاركة من الخارج من ابرز سمات المنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي من خلال ” المنتدى الموسع” : اتصال الفيديو عن طريق الإنترنت فكان الناشطون و المنظمات في جميع أنحاء العالم قادرين على إقامة روابط و شراكات جديدة مع المجتمع المدني العراقي ، وكانت بعض الأنشطة المنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي قد بثت بثا حيا. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك ، تم تنظيم أنشطة التضامن في العديد من البلدان ، قبل وبعد المنتدى . بدأت اعمال المنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي الموسع مع الأنشطة التي اقيمت في بنغلاديش و باكستان يوم 17 سبتمبر وانتهت بعد أسبوع من الفعاليات في إيطاليا في 01-05 أكتوبر .
قدم المنتدى الاجتماعي العراقي مساحة مفتوحة للنقاش والحوار بين الناشطين العراقيين على طائفة واسعة من القضايا ، والتغلب على الحواجز العرقية والسياسية . كان هناك أعضاء من النقابات العراقية ، مجموعات عمل لحماية الأنهار العراقية ، والمنظمات النسائية ، والمدافعين عن حرية التعبير ، متحدثين عن الأقليات العرقية في العراق ، والنشطاء الشباب ، وهذا غيض من فيض. اليوم الحركات الاجتماعية العراقية تشدد على أهمية نبذ العنف و العسكرة في حين تدعم التنمية السياسية والثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية في العراق . فهم يعتقدون أنه ينبغي مواجهة الإرهاب من خلال إنهاء الفساد والفقر و القمع السياسي ، وليس بزيادة الإنفاق العسكري للدولة العراقية .
وكان المشاركين العراقيين والدوليين يتشاركون معا في حمل رسالة مهمة وهي خلق عراق آخر على أساس اللاعنف والعدالة الاجتماعية و حقوق الإنسان . المنتدى لم يؤكد فقط على أن ” عراق آخر ممكن” ، ولكنه أظهر هذا بوضوح من خلال الطاقات الكبيرة الكامنة في العراقيين لإصلاح العراق وتعزيز الكرامة والديمقراطية وتعزيز مجتمع مدني نشط .

The Iraqi Social Forum was a success!
The first Iraqi Social Forum (ISF) took place in Baghdad, from the 26th to the 28th of September 2013. It was the first large gathering in Iraq based upon the World Social Forum Charter of Principles and, with more than 3000 participants, it was the largest national social forum ever in the Arab World. The Forum included about 170 activities, organized by over 150 Iraqi organizations, and their efforts were supported by dozens of volunteers. International participants from Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine, Turkey, Bangladesh, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the United States joined the Iraqis to express their solidarity with Iraqi civil society and support the development of social movements in Iraq.
The official opening ceremony of the ISF took place at Baghdad University on 26 September and was followed by a series of “Sports Against Violence” activities including a 5Km-road race, Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, and traditional dancing. The main activities of the Forum on 27 and 28 September, which included workshops, symposiums, plenary sessions, art galleries, tents representing Iraqi organizations and campaigns, and much more, took place at the Baghdad Cultural Center and in the historic Al-Qushla courtyard overlooking the Tigris River. Iraqi youth has been the protagonist of the whole Forum, participating with enthusiasm in all events and organizing the largest gatherings.
An important feature of the ISF was participation from abroad through an “Extended Forum”: via Internet video-connection, activists and organizations around the world were able to establish links and new partnerships with Iraqi civil society, and some activities of the ISF have been live streamed. In addition, solidarity activities were organized in many countries, before and after the Forum. The Extended Iraqi Social Forum started with events in Bangladesh and Pakistan on 17 September and closed with a week of events in Italy on 1-5 October.
The Iraqi Social Forum provided an open space for discussion and dialogue among Iraqi activists on a wide variety of issues, overcoming ethnical and political barriers. There were members of Iraqi trade unions, groups working to protect Iraq’s rivers, women’s organizations, advocates for freedom of expression, spokespeople for Iraq’s ethnic minorities, and youth activists, to name just a few of the interests that were represented. Today Iraqi social movements stress the importance of rejecting violence and militarism while supporting Iraq’s political, cultural, social and economic development. They believe that terror should be opposed by ending corruption, poverty and political repression, not by higher military spending of the Iraqi state.
Together, Iraqi and international participants in the ISF share a mission to create another Iraq based upon nonviolence, social justice and human rights. The Forum did not just proclaim that “another Iraq is possible”, but clearly demonstrated that there is great energy among Iraqi citizens to reform Iraq and promote dignity, democracy and a robust, engaged civil society.

Succès du Forum Social Irakien !
Le premier Forum Social Irakien (FSI) s’est tenu à Bagdad du 26 au 28 septembre 2013. C’était le premier grand rassemblement en Irak fondé sur la Charte des principes du Forum Social Mondial, et avec plus de 3000 participants, c’est le plus grand forum social national jamais vu dans le monde arabe. Le Forum comprenait près de 170 activités organisées par plus de 150 organisations irakiennes, et leurs efforts ont été soutenus par des douzaines de volontaires. Des participants internationaux d’Egypte, Tunisie, Palestine, Turquie, Bangladesh, Italie, Espagne, Belgique, et des Etats-Unis se sont joints aux irakiens pour exprimer leur solidarité avec la société civile irakienne et soutenir le développement des mouvements sociaux en Irak.
La cérémonie officielle d’ouverture du FSI a eu lieu à l’université de Bagdad le 26 septembre, et était suivie d’une série d’activités « le sport contre la violence » comprenant une course de 5km, des démonstrations de Tae Kwon Do et des danses traditionnelles. Les activités principales du Forum le 27 et 28 septembre, qui comprenaient des ateliers, symposiums et campagnes, et bien plus encore, avaient lieu au Centre Culturel de Bagdad et au palais historique Al-Qushla, surplombant le fleuve Tigre. La jeunesse irakienne était au cœur de tout le Forum, participant avec enthousiasme à tous les événements et organisant de grands rassemblements.
Un élément important du FSI fut la participation de l’étranger par le « Forum Etendu » : via des vidéo-connections internet, des activistes et organisations du monde entier ont pu établir des liens et de nouveaux partenariats avec la société civile irakienne, et certaines activités du FSI ont été retransmises en direct. De plus, des activités de solidarité ont été organisées dans de nombreux pays, avant et après le Forum. Le Forum Social Irakien Etendu a débuté avec des événements au Bangladesh et au Pakistan le 17 septembre et s’est conclu par une semaine d’événements en Italie du 1er au 5 octobre.
Le Forum Social Irakien a proposé un espace ouvert de discussion et de dialogue entre activistes irakiens sur une large variété de sujets, surmontant les barrières ethniques et politiques. Parmi les groupes représentés, citons les syndicats irakiens, les défenseurs de la liberté d’expression, les porte-paroles des minorités ethniques irakiennes, les jeunes activistes… Aujourd’hui les mouvements sociaux irakiens insistent sur l’importance de rejeter la violence et le militarisme tout en soutenant le développement politique, culturel, social et économique de l’Irak. Ils affirment que la terreur doit être combattue en mettant fin à la corruption, la pauvreté et la répression politique, et non pas en augmentant les dépenses militaires de l’état irakien.
Ensembles, participants irakiens et internationaux au FSI partagent la mission de créer un autre Irak fondé sur la nonviolence, la justice sociale et les droits de l’Homme. Le Forum n’a pas seulement proclamé « un autre Irak est possible » mais a clairement démontré qu’il existe une grande énergie parmi les citoyens irakiens pour réformer l’Irak et promouvoir la dignité, la démocratie et une société civile forte et engagée.

El Fórum Social Iraquí ha sido un éxito
El primer Fórum Social Iraquí (FSI) celebrado en Bagdad del 26 al 28 de Septiembre de 2013. Ha sido el más multitudinario en Iraq en consonancia con la Carta de Principios del Foro Social Mundial y, con más de 3000 participantes, ha sido el foro social nacional más grande en el mundo Árabe. El Fórum incluyo alrededor de 170 actividades, organizadas por 150 organizaciones iraquíes, y sus esfuerzos fueron apoyados por docenas de voluntarios. Participantes internacionales de Egipto, Túnez, Palestina, Turquía, Bangladesh, Italia, España, Bélgica y los Estados Unidos se unieron a los Iraquíes para expresar su solidaridad con la sociedad civil Iraquí y apoyar el desarrollo de los movimientos sociales en Iraq.
La ceremonia oficial de inauguración del FSI se realizó en la Universidad de Bagdad el 26 de Septiembre y fue seguida por actividades en el marco de “Deportes contra la Violencia” que incluyeron una carrera de 5 km, demostraciones de Tae Kwon Do y bailes tradicionales. Las actividades principales del Fórum se organizaron del 27 y 28 de Septiembre, e incluyeron talleres, simposios, sesiones plenarias, galerías de arte, tiendas de las organizaciones iraquís y campañas, y mucho más, se organizaron en Centro Cultural de Bagdad y en el histórico patio Al-Qushla con vistas al rio Tigris, los jóvenes iraquíes han sido los protagonistas de todo Fórum, participando con entusiasmo en todos los eventos y organizando las más multitudinarias reuniones.
Una importante característica del FSI fue la participación exterior a través del “Fórum extendido” vía video-conexión por Internet, activistas y organizaciones de alrededor del mundo fueron capaces de establecer links y nuevos partenariados con la sociedad civil Iraquí, y algunas actividades del FSI fueron retrasmitidas por streaming. Además, actividades de solidaridad fueron organizadas en muchos países, antes y después del Fórum. El Fórum Social Iraquí extendido comenzó con eventos en Bangladesh y Paquistán el 17 de Septiembre y se cerro con una semana de actividades en Italia del 1 al 5 de Octubre.
El Fórum Social Iraquí creo un espacio abierto para la discusión y el dialogo entre los activistas iraquís en una gran variedad de temas, superando barreras étnicas y políticas. Hubo miembros de Sindicatos Iraquíes, grupos de trabajo para proteger los ríos iraquíes, organizaciones de mujeres, abogados para la libertad de expresión, portavoces de minorías étnicas iraquíes y jóvenes activistas, por nombrar algunos de los grupos representados. Hoy, los movimientos sociales iraquíes, enfatizan la importancia de rechazar la violencia y el militarismo mientras apoyan el desarrollo político, cultural, social y económico de Iraq. Ellos creen que el terror debe oponerse poniendo fin a la corrupción, pobreza y la represión política, no a través del aumento en gasto militar del Estado Iraquí.
Juntos, Iraquís y participantes internacionales del FSI compartimos la misión de crear otro Iraq basado en la noviolencia, justicia social y derechos humanos. El Fórum no solo proclama que “Otro Iraq es posible”, sino que claramente muestra que hay una gran energía entre los ciudadanos y ciudadanas iraquíes de promover la dignidad, democracia y una robusta y comprometida sociedad civil.
