AFRICAN WOMEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF SUSTAINABILITY: WATER –ENERGY-FOOD NEXUS

Rosemary Olive Mbone Enie, Geologist/Gender Ambassador, Executive Director, Salama Heritage Ecovillage (SHE) Tanzania

Climate change is being described as the single biggest threat to life on planet earth. Although there are still many skeptics in the Global North, who think that these predictions are exaggerated, the realities are very different in the Global South. In many developing countries, the impacts of climate change are already visible and concrete especially within the rural areas.

This presentation describes the experience of African women especially in the rural areas, whose lives are very much impacted by climate change and environmental degradation, the actions they have taken and the lessons they have learnt. What has worked, what did not work and why?

These women are very far from the international debates and most of them do not even know that climate change is one of the most common topics in the meetings and political discussions of world leaders. However, women in rural Africa can clearly describe the various impacts of climate change in their own lives as well as in the communities they live.

Hence the Women Environment and Climate Action Network (WECAN) Africa Initiative was established at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Conference of Parties (COP) 14, 2008 in Poznan Poland. The aim of the WECAN Africa initiative is;

ü  Empowerment of women to make local work more effective,

ü  Make the contribution of women to sustainable development more important,

ü  Promoting empowerment programs for women and

ü  Enabling women to work together as active agents of change.
