PURPOSE OF CONVENING

The purpose of the ecological justice convening is to bring together leaders of grassroots social movements working in Nairobi so as to strategies on how to push the County Government and the National Government to be accountable to the people on issues related on ecological justice. 

The convening will help in coming up with a Nairobi County Ecological Justice Working Group and also develop a work plan for advancing ecological justice for the people of Nairobi. The Working Group will among other things be a space where the citizens can come up with strategies of addressing some of the issues affecting them.

 

WHO IS INVITED IN  PROJECTED WORKING GROUP 

The target groups are grassroots organizations working on waste management directly and those advocating for the authorities to be accountable to the people in terms of waste management.


SKETCH OF WORKING GROUP OPERATION

The Working Group aim at formation of natural resource users associations for those living along rivers, wetlands and public lands like schools, play grounds and social centers etc.

The overall objective of the Working Group shall be to have the people’s voice in development of overall policies that deal will solving causes of poverty, poor governance and weak environmental policies that deny the city residents their ecological justice.

This will be attained by the Working Group engaging with stakeholders like MCA’s, MP’s, Environmental Officers, Ward Administrators, Other Civil Society Organizations, NEMA and Nairobi water etc so that they can know the importance of this cause. This would be done through submission of petitions to them, having one on one meeting with them and inviting them in public barazas in the target areas to enable them streamline people’s issues on Ecological Justice in policy

Media including social media will be used to engage with the larger community. The Working Group will engage members of the communities and also policy makers through social media platforms like facebook, twitter, whatsapp etc. communities living in ecologically sensitive areas within Nairobi County will be mobilized and informed about the ecological justice campaign.

The Working Group will also in the long run in partnership with the Pamoja Trust help in coming up with practical interventions in addressing the pathetic conditions and settlements occupied by the Nairobi Urban Poor. The Working Group will also assist in coming up with mechanisms of dealing with effects of flooding for those living along the rivers and also organize the affected communities to come up with strategies and proposals for policy interventions to address issues of garbage and waste accumulation, incessant demolitions due to land grabs.


EXPECTED ACTION AND EFFECT OF WORKING GROUP  

1. The formation of the Ecological Justice Working Group will enable local peasant communities to influence policies that touch on environment issues, ecological justice through users associations and also access various structures and mechanisms for enforcing ecological justice like the National Environmental Tribunal.

2. The communities shall also be involved in developing a framework of management of environment and the ecosystem while at the same time be able to influence budgetary allocations on areas of interventions. 

3. Such engagements shall also help all the stakeholders in identifying gaps in the existing laws and provide changes to the laws to ensure ecological justice.

4. This engagement with the communities and the stakeholders including members of the Working Group shall act as a learning space for all those involved in the campaign on general issues related to ecological justice. x
