Progressive extension of social forumevents means that. 3

Integration of distance participation in activity registrationfor wsf2011 has been agreed in dakar seminar , following discussion occurred inSOC+ ASF + Comcom communication meetings ( to be confirmed by participants there)

it is point 5 ofa proposedDakar expanded check list that was circulated in comcom and in SOC comcom( whereas the general discussion on extended forumheld on Sunday 25th reported by Giuseppe refers to a more generalpoint 1 )

http://openfsm.net/projects/sfexintercom/daket-checklist

Now let us see what does that may mean concretely

Integrating upfront “distance participation” in the registration processis not givinga simple"yes/no" question at the end of the form such as" are you willingto have distance participation ? "(This has been done in Belem activity registration form, with no practical results)

Integrating up front“distance participation” means two things

That the website explicitly mention possibilities of distance participation from its initial page

( as an example see palestine wsf example http://wef-palestine.org/node/144 and http://wef-palestine.org/node/45 , and this could be made even more visible

and

That a common interface/ form is used to explicit the contents and logistics elements of all activities

Logistics and contentselements ( who ? what? where? when? ) considering the varioustypes of activities that can occur in “an extended social forum process with a center event”, and not justthe activities in the center event

1 -Based on accumulated sfex experience since 2008 , one can distinguish VARIOUS CASES of activities with regards to "extension"

Please bear with the notations here;-):

  • 1> means "centric location"i-e Dakar in wsf2011
  • 2 >means "surrounding location"i-e anywhere in the world
  • L> means local = face to face ( including all cases of face to face : i-ea conference with 10 speakers and 5 mn for audience questions,or a very participatory workshop sitting in circle)
  • DR > means distance encounter ( not face to face but face to screen)between two or more groups -
The DR activity practice is mostly today betweentwo groups / two location through skype video, and it can be between several groups/several locationthrough bigbluebutton , or through skype audioetc..
Note that practice of global activities (i-e severallocationwith no "center") which already exist in many networkscan develop as DR activities outside the moment of a centerevent which naturally tend to be the center

  • E > means "extension by mean of IVM or IRT "(i-e "instant video and messaging" or "instant radio and telephone" - thisallows distance watching /listening ( through video or radio) and "distance participation" to the activity, thanks to a person in the activity room having the role of" internet contact " or "telephone contact" , who is able to speak in the activity face to face room in other people's name sending their inputs through messaging or telephone call
  • DP >means collective distance participation in a localactivity that is extended ( E) through IVM or IRT

That setL LC LE LCE - DR DRE - DP is already a rather complete set of possibilities , taking into account the basic difference between“face to face” and “face to screen” communication inside the activity rooms

- L LC LE LCE activities which can be Extended or Connected, are mainly "face to face"and can go on even if the connection is interrupted ( and correspond to the existing practice in social forum events

and

- DR DRE and DP activities which can be Extended are mainly “face to screen” and depend completely on quality of connection, and correspond to a new practice in social forum events

Progressive extension of social forum events means that

Proportion ofDR DP activities related to L activities will grow progressively

Proportion of LC LE activities related to all L activities will grow progressively

Note that whenever there is a L2 activity organized , the number of people involved in L2 activities is greater than the number of people involved in correlated DR and DP2 activities linked to this L2 activity ( i-e local dynamics are greater than just distance participation to center event – this is the expansion effectwhere distance participation possibility acts as an incentive for local organizers to set up bigger L2 activities

DP Distance participation to these three types of activity is possible if they extend through IVM ( instant video and messaging) or IRT (instant radio and

telephon

Local face to face activities_______________________

L -Dakar face to face activity ( L1), + option of connection moment inside it(LC1), + option ofIVM or IRT extension of it ( L1E) (i-e instant video and messaging or instant radio and telephone - allowing distance participationto the activity, either personal or collective ( DP)

Accumulated experience hereis:

Palestine and Osaka are to date two well documented L1E cases ( substantial chat room log)with a group of distant participants, warned in advance of IVM and interacting in a chat room and having an “internet contact” person sitting in Palestine and Osaka rooms )

L2 -decentralized face to face activity out of center/ dakar+LC2option of connection moment inside it , +L2Eoption ofIVM or IRT extension of it(i-e instant video and messaging or instant radio and telephone allowing distance participation to the activity

Accumulated experence for this is :

DRdistance encounter activities ( face to screen)_____________________

DR -Distance encounter activitybetween Dakar and some place , or between two places out of Dakar (or RD in French) + DRE -IVM or IRT extension of DR(i-e" instant video and messaging "or "instant radio and telephone" - allowing distance participation to theencounter activity

Accumulated experience for this is :

DP distance participation activities ( face to screen)_______________________________

DP1 - Distance participation activity organized in the center /Dakar , consisting in attending collectively an L2E activity through IVM IRT

DP2 - Distance participation activity organized out ofcenter/Dakar, consisting in attending collectively an L1E or another L2E activity through IVM IRT

No experience for this yet,

PD1 will most probably appear in Palestine WEF ( e-g a group in Gaza venue attending remotely an activity L1 in Ramallah venue with IVM extension ) - the question of inter-venue participation and encounters is key for WEF dynamics which is spread in 5 locations

PD2 should be equally appearing in Palestine WEF ( e-g a group in Montreal attending remotely an activity L1 in Haifa venue with IVM extension,

Both PD activitieswill developasorganizers of activityL1(center)or L2 ( rest of the world)begin more and moreto self organize andannounce in advance on the website in their activity form thatthey will doIVM IRT extension of their activity, with which channel and with which contact( this is the case for Palestine website)

3 - including the various typeof activities inthe wsf2011registration interface

A proposedDakar expanded check listhttp://openfsm.net/projects/sfexintercom/daket-checklist

is coming with a activity registration form proposalhttp://openfsm.net/projects/sfexintercom/daket-form-en2

It illustrates, through Sfex accumulated experience, what an upfrontintegration of distance participation activities( encounters , distance participation , decentralized activities )in activity registration can look like

This is most useful as discussion input since, so far, activity registration have addressed only L1 case

Of course such an interface can have many versions :the proposed one is one among variouspossible ,and thewsf2011 / portal one will be result of a collective teamwork

Another input is the interface developed in Palestine wef http://wef-palestine.org/

Palestine wef web team has developed two twin registration interfaces

- one for Palestineactivities L1+ interlink option C+ IVM extension option E

- one for expanded activitiesL2 + interlink option C + IVM extensionoption E

http://wef-palestine.org/taxonomy/term/37

These two registrations forms require still some logistical tuning – practice will be developed in the coming monthes
