Thanks for this useful info Giuseppe. Maybe we can try to determine some kind of strategy up-front? My (Babels) problem is to have someone present to input the most judicious remarks, make offers of training etc. As there is a very high degree of genuine multilingualism in the region, it is genuinely possible to train first level interpreters who can do great work (students or graduates in economy, sociology, politics etc. ). We did this very successfully in both Bamako for the polycentric WSF as well as for Nairobi.... There is a good Babels chapter in Dakar, but they are not necessarily co-ordinators. I shall be working with various of the Senegalese OC members in Bordeaux July 7-11 (the CRID summer university), just after the European Social Forum, which I imagine I shall also attend & help facilitate as interpreter.

Additionally I shall be working in Mali in a few days time, and Gregoire & I are starting to mobilise and train interpreters there. Thi initiative is not yet coordinated with Dakar, but will probably be a help...

If funding were available to cover my ticket (I have plenty of options of friends who could put me up), I would be available to help in the Dakar meeting, depending on the dates, both as one of the interpreters for the meeting and to input on training, coordination etc. I am also pretty much prepared to go there several weeks before the WSF to help, as I did with Nairobi, on the basis of my ticket + local living expenses, ie a per diem for food (again accommodation is not the issue...).

In solidarity

Judith

Judith,

the issues related to translation were mentioned repeatedly in the context of the strategy, expansion, methodology and of course communication commission. while it was noted that it is crucial to allow intellibililty to create spaces of encounter and engagement, no specific direction for actions have been set vis a vis Dakar. It is possible that several avenues will be explored by the african facillitators and their IC partners at large including volunteer and professional translation. these issues will be discussed more thoroughly at the technical seminar to take place in dakar (maybe) in July.

Dear all,

Firstly many thanks for this very comprehensive report, Giuseppe

Apart from a one-word mention of "new languages" could you please enlighten me as to what - if anything - was said about the interpretation issue, the approach of paid professionals versus voluntary professionals + others trained up in the run-up to the event? As a member of Babels and someone who has been involved in coordinating WSF interpretation (as well as many other events) these are key communication issues, and I really would appreciate some feedback, having made a samll contribution to the discussion, albeit at a distance!

Many thanks

Judith
